Methadone Treatment

When methadone treatment originated it was to be a 20 day process to help ease the pain of withdrawal from opiate addiction. Today methadone treatment facilities are run based on their financial success. They base their success on profit from their customers. Think about it this way, if a methadone treatment center is licensed to treat 200 individuals and they currently are only treating 199, you are not going to get off methadone. This is due to the fact that they need you as a customer. Their twisted outlook on helping fight the battle of drug addiction is atrocious. How can one possibly conceive that the trading of opiate addiction for methadone addiction is a step in the right direction. Methadone treatment clinics claim that they help in reducing the spread of HIV and Hepatitis due to the fact that their customers receive their "treatment" orally. This is a very naive philosophy, having done an extended amount of research it is know that many of these individuals not only inject the methadone they receive, but abuse other drugs as well.

Here is a statement made by one methadone treatment facility:

Another area where methadone is misunderstood is the length of time a patient should be on it. It's just like insulin for the diabetic. Insulin controls diabetes--while the patient is taking it. Blood pressure medication controls hypertension--while the patient is taking it. Methadone controls the disease of opiate addiction--while the patient is taking it. Even the most well-adjusted, committed person should think long and seriously about withdrawing from this medication. The odds are against us when we quit taking it.

The compairson of methadone treatment to the treatment of diabeaties is quite ironic. When a person has diabeaties they need insulin to live, without they run the risk of death. The irony is that a person who is addicted to opiates does not need or require methadone to live. If the said person where to detox off of opiates they would be able to live their lives free of addiction, isn't that a wonderful thought! Sadly, an individual who requires insulin due to diabetes must continue taking insulin for the rest of their lives. For them to detox off insulin would possibly result in death. The comparisons that many methadone treatment centers make for their justification of methadone maintenance treatment are unfounded. Take the time to look closely at what they claim and choose wisely, a lifetime of addiction is no way to enjoy life.

  • Drug Facts
  • Methadone was initially used as a painkiller by the Germans during World War II.
  • Methadone Maintenance is not a cure for heroin or opiate addiction.
  • Many former heroin users have claimed that the horrors of heroin withdrawal were far less painful and difficult than withdrawal from methadone.
  • As long as an individual is receiving methadone treatment they are still addicted to opioids.
